Discover
Your Options
July 04, 2004
You don't need to suffer a bad job or no job at all. Imagine some
possibilities. Discover your options. Consider Commercial Diving
Academy. We are more than a school that offers training in commercial
diving. We offer you options. Consider this: an entry level job,
in great demand, that offers an average salary with overtime around
$46,000 per year. Is that an option you're interested in?
Recent headlines and news releases suggest that the employment situation
in the United States is on the mend. For example, recent Bureau
of Labor Statistics (BLS) figures say that payroll employment increased
by a total of 947,000 in the last three months. But there seems
to be a disconnect between the official numbers and reality. Comstock
Partners highlights this disconnect with the observation that "According
to consumer surveys most people, answering on the basis of personal
experience, feel that the labor picture is weak, and it is possible
that this belief reflects more reality than the official numbers."
(See Phantom
Jobs?)
Perhaps your personal experience doesn't match the headlines you
see. If you're out of work or feel stuck in a dead-end, boring job,
Commercial Diving Academy offers you some good options. In addition
to the training we offer for careers in commercial diving, an Able
Seaman (AB) training program is coming soon to Commercial Diving
Academy.
An Able Seaman is skilled labor aboard a vessel. Able Seamen, usually
called an AB, are responsible for steering a ship, acting as a lookout,
patrolling a ship to look for problems, using deck machinery to
accomplish different tasks, supervising Ordinary Seamen, and helping
to keep a ship maintained.
Able Seamen are in great demand, not only in this country, but around
the world. The Europa website says the following about the maritime
industry:
"Despite that, this industry suffers from a lack of qualified
European seafarers. In 2002, the shortage of officers was around
30,000, that is to say a deficit of 30% of the need to man the some
10,000 ships of this European fleet. There is therefore a very acute
need for seafaring skills and maritime expertise not only at sea
but also ashore, as the seafaring profession is a key gateway to
a multiplicity of interesting appointments in shore based maritime
activities."
(See Maritime
Careers)
What options do you have as an Able Seaman? The possibility cited
in the opening paragraph of this article is an example of an average
wage, with overtime, for an AB working in a civilian capacity for
the Military Sealift Command.
Blanche Evans observes that "Despite recent reports of hundreds
of thousands of jobs gained, we have experienced the longest period
of job loss since the Great Depression through the first half of
2004." (See The
Perfect Real Estate Storm). If you find your own career prospects
to be depressing, consider the options you'll find at Commercial
Diving Academy. Shoot us an email or give us a call to get more
details on what we can do for you. Come back often to our site for
future articles and updates. Discover your options with Commercial
Diving Academy.
